Tips for Parenting Your Kindergarten Student

Entering kindergarten is an important time for a child. Here are a few tips that may help.

Entering kindergarten is an important time for a child.  Children at this age start to form their own opinions and become more independent. This is also a time when a lot of children are away from their family for a portion of the day.  Your child will start to have a structured day at school and sometimes parents find their “Go To” parenting techniques are not working like normal.  As your child grows you will have to evolve with them.  Here are a few tips that may help.

Family Traditions

Try to keep traditions and create new ones as your child grows up.  Have Saturday movie nights, where everyone takes a turn picking a movie, or have a certain night when you order pizza and play board games.

Talk to your child

Make sure you sit down and have dinner as a family.  This is a time when there is no distraction from television or video games.  Make it a routine to talk about your day and have your child talk about theirs.  You can go around the table and play “High Low”. Each person says what their best part of their day and the worst part of their day.  This gives everyone a chance to cheer on your child, but also be there to listen to them when something negative has happened.

Don’t overdue the screen time

It is very easy to let your child go on the tablet.  It keeps them occupied and engaged for a long time, and it usually gives you time to get things done.  The problem is when screen time becomes all the time.  Have everyone in the house (even you) put down their electronics for a certain amount of time and play a game together or you can have family reading time.

It is easy to get caught up in all the activities that will come your child’s way as they grow up.  Every season has a sport, and every hobby has a class or club.  Remember to choose quality over quantity when it comes to choosing activities.  It is important for both the children and the parents to have some down time and just relax at home.

These simple tips can help make the transition into kindergarten a little easier.
