Learning to read and write can be a difficult time for a child, but it can also be a time filled with joy if it is done right.

Learning to read and write can be a difficult time for a child, but it can also be a time filled with joy if it is done right. Here are a few things you can do at home to help you child build their confidence in reading and writing.

Scavenger Hunt:

Choose a letter from the alphabet and print out picture of words that start with that letter. You can cut out the pictures and color them with your child, and make sure you write the word on the back.  Hide them around the house and give your child a list to check off when they find each one.

Act it Out:

Choose books that have a lot of rhyming or songs, and sing and act out the scenes with your child.  If you really want to get into it make a book into a play.  Create the costumes and act it out with your child.

The Great Storyteller:

All you need is your imagination.  Ask your child to tell you a story.  Make sure you ask them “and then what happened?”  Pay attention and react with enthusiasm. If you don’t understand any part of the story have your child explain it to you. This will help them understand the importance of an audience and give them more confidence in the future.
